PINA is a feature-length dance film in 3D with the ensemble of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, featuring the unique and inspiring art of the great German choreographer, who died in the summer of 2009. Magnificent, breathtaking, mysterious, Pina is a film by Wim Wender who wanted to make a tribute to a great choreographer. He takes the audience on a sensual, visually stunning journey of discovery into a new dimension: straight onto the stage with the legendary Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch ensemble, he follows the dancers out of the theatre into the city and the surrounding areas of Wuppertal – the place, which for 35 years was the home and centre for Pina Bausch’s creativity.

When architects and designers are called in to redesign a space that already exists for a specific reason and their goal is to reinvent that space for an entirely different use, professionals are faced with a duality of responsibility and potential. In order to respect what once was and bring truth and beauty to the space that is without time or purpose, the task at hand becomes visceral. Questions arise as to how we want people to feel in this space. How can this space envelop the senses and become functional in its new incarnation while retaining its inherent beauty? These questions emerged when churtichaga+quadra salcedo (ch+qs) architects commenced on their project to turn an old slaughterhouse in Legazpi, Madrid into a public cinema center. Their imagination would become their guide to tie in the past with the present and the raw emotion with the practical. The public cinema center is a huge complex made up of several connecting buildings, housing a film archive, a film and television studio, offices, two cinemas, a canteen and a summer film patio. The designer had the following three inspirations to draw from when creating the design: The magical backlight and contrast of the [...]

Irena Sendler, who died 2008 at 98, was a Polish social worker who helped save an estimated 2,500 Jewish children from the Nazis by smuggling them out of the Warsaw Ghetto and giving them false identities. Her dramatic story, including how she was captured and nearly tortured to death and how she managed to preserve the children’s true identities in jars buried under an apple tree, became widely known only in recent years. A group of four Kansas schoolgirls brought her to worldwide attention. Last year, as Vice President Gore was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, voices around the globe called for it instead to be awarded to the savior of the Warsaw Ghetto. When she heard that Israel’s Prime Minister Peres had written to President Kaczynski of Poland about nominating her for the Nobel, Sendler told The New York Sun: “This brings me great joy, but on the other hand it’s a shame my liaison officers are not alive. I would not have been able to do anything without the crew of people around me.” Sendler, a Roman Catholic, was born in Otwock, outside Warsaw, on February 15, 1910. Her father was a physician who directed a spa hospital. [...]

We have a lot in common with pigeons, even if we are not always willing to admit it. If you think about it, we share the same streets, the same parks and the same urban landscapes, we love big city life as much as they do and we often dirty and damage our environment. Bird lovers will also tell you about their intelligence, their capacity to remember the people that feed them and their ability to recognize all 26 letters of the English language. There are also people who all but despise them, maybe because of their tendency to use (without even asking) our balconies. Biblical references apart, pigeons are one of the most misunderstood animals around, with a range of roles from love messenger to decadent parasite. Photographer Lisa Klappe and visual artist Joachim Van Den Hurk always wanted to do something in their defense and that’s how they decided to start with their Decadent Pigeons project, an artsy apology of a sometimes shameless bird. The first edition of the Decadent Pigeons project was held in Barcelona in 2010 and, after various spin offs in Eindhoven and Maastricht, the second edition landed some days ago again in the Catalan [...]

Portuguese architects Aires Mateus, come once again with a very interesting project in the Aroeira district in Portugal. This time the project takes the form of a residence which sits on a 1,500 square meter hexagonal site, from which the house derives its shape. Of course, the hexagonal shape goes easily unnoticed as the site lacks fencing and therefore the land spills out and into the surrounding pine trees blending in with the surrounding landscape. Covering the maximum possible building surface area according to the zoning regulations of Aroeira the single story residential project occupies a total of 300 square meters of construction; concentric to the six-sided plot it ‘echoes’ the shape of the site. Arranged around a courtyard to which every space converges, the unique form of the residence articulates spaces as an extension of the central space. Beginning from an unpredictable shape, the residence encounters its first sharp boundary in the outline of the canopy. The auxiliary zones resolve the geometry, tranquilizing the main spaces. However, the hexagonal form of this building which takes the shape of the site, has managed to obtain maximum privacy as the two ends of the house converge. Moreover, the shape of the [...]
